MY BUSINESS RELATED EXPERIENCES
Mock
Interviews

November 2014
Mock Interviews has been one of the most helpful business opportunities I have been given in my high school career. After being forced by my mother to sign up for them back in 2012, I reluctantly agreed. However, two years later, my interviewing skills have majorly improved. Now, I feel more comfortable in an interview setting and have become more accustomed to the different types of questions asked and how to respond to them. Nowadays when I attend these activities, I feel much more at ease.

I attended the Pennsylvania FBLA State Leadership Workshop in November of 2014. This two-day experience was a wonderful learning opportunity for me, my fellow local club officers, and our advisers. Not only did we get to network with students from around the state, but learned leadership techniques that we will be using in the upcoming year in our own chapter.

As a regional officer, I was required to attend the Regional Leadership Workshop. Here, I read the minutes from our Regional Leadership Conference held in January and had to put together and present a workshop for the region. My workshop was entitled "Social Media and FBLA" and gave statistics of current social media use as well as how to use it to better your club. I had the assistance of my fellow officer team and we discussed our club's Twitter and how we use it to our advantage.

I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the National Conference as an intern to the photographer of the event. Throughout my week in Memphis/ Nashville, I gained many friends and memories that will last a lifetime. The workshops were held by some wonderful speakers and I gained knowledge through them that will help my FBLA chapter in the future. NLC 2014 is truly an experience I will never forget.

Job Shadow
May 2014
Woodloch Pines is a local resort known nationwide for its wonderful spa facilities. My job shadow here gave me an idea of what an accountant at a large resort would do. I followed around the main accountant for the day and also worked with the man in charge of the accounts payable. Compared to the other small, private accounting firm I have visited, I thought this area of accounting was much more interesting.
April 2014
Although I never really considered working at a bank to be part of my future, when I was presented the opportunity to shadow at one, I just couldn't pass it up. The first person I met with was the Vice President of Deposit Operations. I learned in detail of the different types of online systems the bank uses to communicate with their customers and the federal government and about the banks mobile banking option. Afterwards, I met with the controller of the bank who showed me how she bookkeeps. The most important lesson I learned while shadowing at the bank is that there is so much more to a bank than the teller at the front counter. Everything that goes on behind the scenes is crucial to the operation. I also learned, the bank life is not for me!

After being elected Region 22 Secretary, I was required by my region to attend the State Leadership Conference and attend a Regional Leadership Implementation Workshop. The State Conference was a wonderful opportunity to make friends with students from around the state, memories with kids from my school, and acquire leadership knowledge I could later implement in my region. While here, I was honored as a regional officer, and got to go up on the big stage to accept an award on behalf of my chapter for our chapter growth in the past year (good enough for second place). Additionally, a team of three boys from my school got third place in their Business Financial Plan and would be competing at nationals, a first in my schools history!

January 2014
At my Regional Leadership Conference this past year, I had quite a bit to do. Not only did I have to prepare and give a speech in Public Speaking 2, but I also had to give one in front of the 500+ people in attendance that day as I campaigned for regional secretary. In the previous year, all of Region 22's officers came from the same school. In my speech, I addressed the unfairness of this and received quite the response. It gave me a huge burst of confidence for my Public Speaking speech. Here, I addressed the FBLA goal of "Create more of an interest in and understanding of American Business Enterprise". The speech went great! Unfortunately, I got 2nd place in my event which was not quite good enough to compete at the state competition. However, I came away with a Regional Secretary win and would be attending States in April!

Info Session
November 2013
I got the opportunity to travel to Penn State Worthington Scranton with seven other students from my school for an inside look at a college business student's life. At this informational session, I sat down with about five of the university's students and asked them everything I wanted to know. We also were treated to an informational session on different business majors and what each one entailed. Since I plan to pursue a business major, this was very helpful to me. This session didn't just apply to this school, but to pretty much any business major at any other school.

Job Shadow
October 2013
My accounting firm job shadow was exactly what it would be. The accountant sat in a cubicle and I sat with her as she led me through the daily responsibilities and daily routine of a private accountant. I also got to check out the other cubicles all around the firm and meet some very high up people. I learned on that day that I never want to be an accountant.
